Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Thomas Dausgaard “Clarity is a given with this particular band (their coupling of Symphonies Nos2 and 4 has already proved that) and here the same impressions of transparency, watertight ensemble, dovetailed phrasing and buoyant rhythms pertain.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2008 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Furtwängler conducts SchumannStudio & Live Recordings 1951-1953
Schumann: | Symphony No. 4 in D minor, Op. 120 Studio Recording, Berlin, May 14, 1953 Berliner Philharmoniker Symphony No. 1 in B flat major, Op. 38 'Spring' Live Recording, Munich, October 29, 1951 Wiener Philharmoniker |
The booklet contains two pictures of Wilhelm Furtwängler that have never been published before: they show the German conductor at the head of the Berliner Philharmoniker at the Teatro Carlo Felice of Genoa, on January 20, 1941. “Furtwangler's obvious grasp of symphonic structure and his ability to perceive both the big picture and the tiny details marked his interpretations in the music of other, greater composers. Nowhere is that more apparent than in the Schumann, which the conductor infuses with engrossing bite. Has anyone ever led the Scherzo with more passion and precision? And in the finale, one stands mute as Furtwangler effortlessly blends gravity and levity.” New York Times on a previous recording of Furtwängler conducting Schumann’s 4th Symphony in 1953. |
