On 9 March 1842, when Nabucco was first produced, Giuseppe Verdi was twenty-nine years old. and just another musician trying to get himself moticed, However his talent was soon recognised by Bartolomeo Merelli, impresario of La Scala in Milan and the Imperial Theatre in Vienna. A single evening was enough to make him the man of the moment, at a time when opera was the surest and quickest means for a composer to secure affluence, material comfort, fame and respect. It must be remembered that the principle roles were taken by three of the most famous opera singers of that time: the impressive soprano Giuseppina Strepponi - who was to be forced by ill health into premature retirement six years later, and who was to become Verdi’s attentive life-partner sang the part of Abigaille, Giorgio Ronconi, a baritone and a great specialist in the art of bel canto, was Nabucco, and the bass Prosper Derivis took the part of Zaccaria.

Leo Nucci (Nabucco) & Maria Guleghina (Abigaille)

Orchestra & Chorus of the Arena di Verona, Daniel Oren

Recorded - Arena di Verona, Italy 2007

“There is a good sense here of the fitness of things, and of their grandeur too. Guleghina is the Abigaille of out time: powerful, intense, wide of range, agile in passagework, and when need arises capable of softness. As Nabucco, the veteran Nucci comes through with impressive authority and stamina... Chorus and orchestra do the arena and its 2007 season credit.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2008

David Parry

includes the full libretto

"At last. British baritone Alan Opie confirms that he is, as his fans have long maintained, one of the few truly great Verdi baritones of his generation. From his first, majestic entrance, through to his compassionate, legato-laced redemption, Opie need fear no comparison with any rivals (OK, Tito Gobbi had that unforgettable bite in the voice, but in every other respect Opie is even his equal). Alongside him, Susan Patterson reaches grand, characterful heights as Abigail, while Alastair Miles is a granite-voiced Zachariah. Under David Parry’s superb conducting, the whole set reeks of theatricality, verve and true Verdian style" - Gramophone Magazine
