Vaughan Williams: The Lark Ascending

This page lists all recordings of The Lark Ascending, by Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) on CD. Generally, more recent CDs are listed first, but with priority given to items that are in stock.

The Lark Ascending is the nation’s favourite piece of music, according to Classic FM’s Hall of Fame 2008.

Inspired by George Meredith’s poem of the same name, the violin’s soaring lines and fluttering trills represent the song of the lark, whilst the orchestral accompaniment provides the backdrop against which the lark flies.

Vaughan Williams composed the work for violin and piano in 1914, but didn’t orchestrate it until after the First World War.

One of the leading English composers of his generation, Vaughan Williams went some way towards creating a specifically English musical idiom, influenced by his interest in folk-song yet underpinned by a personal vision and language. This is nowhere better expressed than in his superb cycle of Nine Symphonies. The ‘London’ Symphony features a rich medley of thematic material that suggests the varied life of the capital city. The Lark Ascending, which concludes this disc, is one of Vaughan Williams’s most enduringly popular compositions

Vaughan Williams:

The Lark Ascending

Nicola Benedetti (violin)

London Philharmonic Orchestra, Andrew Litton

One word unites the works on this album, and that word is ‘ethereal’. The soundworld of English composer Sir John Tavener is often described as ‘ethereal’; possessing an otherworldly, spiritual quality that strikes deep into the soul. And Ralph Vaughan Williams’s aural portrait of that blithe little lark as it spirals up into the heavens is an ethereal vision. The Lark Ascending is the most popular classical piece of music in the UK, as voted by Classic FM listeners.
