Carlos Kleiber, conducting genius or madman? This highly intelligent, well-read, sensitive and charming, disarmingly
humorous, sometimes cynical and irascible man was often dismissed as an eccentric and his notorious
refusals, his curiously short recording career, his complete rejection of publicity were regarded not so much as the
expression of a deep-felt artistic sensitivity as the arbitrary behaviour of a talented but fl amboyant personality …
When Carlos Kleiber made these recordings of rehearsals and concert performance of the overtures to Die Fledermaus
and Der Freischütz for SDR in the spring of 1970 with the Südfunk Symphony Orchestra in Stuttgart’s Villa Berg, he
was already more in demand as a conductor than most of his contemporaries.
This DVD offers a rare glimpse of Kleiber’s often highly original attempts to verbally communicate his ideas to his
musicians. Here was a man who preferred to avoid the limelight: even at the height of his fame in the mid 1970s,
when he was being celebrated as a star conductor, the fi rst signs of a slow withdrawal were already discernible. “Here is a conductor who seduces a sullen-looking orchestra into playing their hearts out, by sheer energy, charm, articulateness, imagination and utter delight in the music ('Play it really dirtily!'). The experience is as intoxicating for the spectator as for the players.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2008 **** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

Leif Ove Andsnes (piano) & Dorothea Röschmann (soprano) The Cleveland Orchestra, Franz Welser-Möst Recorded live at the Carnegie Hall, New York, 4 October 2006 “Andsnes gave a typically lovely performance, playing with rippling passagework and, when called for, rhythmic bite, shaping lines sensitively and conveying ennobled sadness in the wistful Andante…Anyone in need of larger scale, more emotionally committed Mozart will have found it here. This was impassioned, full-bodied singing in which Röschmann showed characteristic regard to projecting the text.” The New York Times on the Concert | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
