Maria Callas, Giuseppe Di Stefano, Ettore Bastiannini & Giluietta Simionato Chorus & Orchestra La Scala, Milan, Gianandrea Gavazzeni Callas live, and at the peak of her powers – inspired performances that put her studio sets in the shade…. In the case of Ballo the context of an evening in the theatre makes this a more arresting, vivid interpretation on all sides than its studio counterpart of a year earlier, with Gianandrea Gavazzeni galvanising his fine cast to great things. As the late John Ardoin put it in his study of Callas’s recordings: ‘The La Scala performance is sung with more vivid colours, with accents more etched and a general intensification of Verdi’s drama.’ …. Ettore Bastianini’s forthright Renato, the only role he sang in London and one of his best in an all too short career, and Giulietta Simionato’s classic Ulrica are huge assets.” (Gramophone) | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Massimiliano Pisapia, Franco Vassallo, Chiara Taigi, Annamaria Chiuri, Eun Yee You & Herman Wallén Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Chorus of the Leipzig Opera & Leipzig Ballet, Riccardo Chailly “Chailly's conducting left no wish unfulfilled, managing to conjure such a voluptuous sound from the orchestra that had not been heard from this pit in a while, sumptuous rumbling as well as transparency and lightness where necessary. A gripping iridescence between drama and grotesquerie was matched with great care for detailed phrasing, never losing sight of the whole. Orchestra as well as singers corresponded to their best.” The Opera Critic | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Amy Shuard, Jon Vickers, Ettore Bastianini, Regina Resnik, Joan Carlyle, Michael Langdon, David Kelly, Victor Godfrey, John Kollman & George Barker The Covent Garden Opera Chorus & The Covent Garden Orchestra, Edward Downes Recorded on 23 February 1962 (mono) “Most people will probably be drawn to this live 1962 Un Ballo in Maschera...by the prospect of hearing Jon Vickers as Gustavo, a role he never recorded commercially. Paradoxically, however, his performance is in some respects the least interesting thing about the set. The main reason you need to hear it is the exceptional Renato from Ettore Bastianini, the greatest of all Verdi baritones, who died young in 1967. His only appearance at Covent Garden, this is one of the best of his several extant versions of a role, which no one else has ever sung so beautifully or characterised with such passionate subtlety. Edward Downes's conducting is white hot throughout, and the rest of the cast is strong, too.” The Guardian, 9th May 2008 **** “...Maybe [Vickers] was greater as Radames and Don Carlo than as Gustavo, which demands more elegance than he possessed. The intensity, though, the heroic ring of the voice, is thrilling. Ettore Bastianini is not at his best and Joan Carlyle’s Oscar is pallid, but Amy Shuard is a moving Amelia.” Sunday Times, 20th April 2008 *** “Jon Vickers characterisation of the doomed king is odd but powerful… The under-recorded Amy Shuard… is a passionate Amelia, and the cast throughout is impressive.” BBC Music Magazine, Proms 2008 **** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

Luciano Pavarotti, Katia Ricciarelli (Amelia), Judith Blegen (Oscar), Bianca Berini (Ulrica) and Louis Quilico (Renato) Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus, Giuseppe Patane Classic, all-star performance of one of the great Verdi operas, featuring Pavarotti in one of his most celebrated roles.
Available for the first time on DVD, the complete opera of the classic 1980 production by Elijah Moshinsky of Verdi's Un ballo in maschera, filmed live from the Metropolitan Opera.
This was an eye-catching and thought-provkoing production. Moshinsky staged the action in pre-revolutionary 1774 Boston. “…a valuable record and a highly enjoyable one, in Elijah Moshinsky's clean-cut production… Pavarotti, in golden voice and intense presence, is well matched by Louis Quilico's rich-voiced, mordant Renato and Katia Ricciarelli's deeply felt if occasionally strained Amelia, not to mention Judith Blegen's sparkling Oscar.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2008 ***** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
