| | | Beethoven - The Piano Sonatas (Volume 6)Live recording from Zurich’s Town Hall, produced by Manfred Eicher
Volume VI of András Schiff’s much acclaimed live Beethoven cycle in chronological order offers five masterworks from the so-called “middle period” ie the first decade of the 19th century, when among other groundbreaking compositions, the “Eroica” Symphony was written. The CD features two of his most popular sonatas, those named ‘Appassionata’ (No 23 in F minor) and ‘Les Adieux’ (No 26 in E flat) as well as the neglected Op 54 Sonata, and Opp. 78 and 79. Like all Schiff’s Beethoven recitals, some sonatas were played on a Bösendorfer, others on a Steinway. “Three of these middle-period works are short, but what riches they deliver, and all abundantly and robustly realised by Schiff.” BBC Music Magazine, Proms 2008 ***** “It's rare to hear Les adieux's blazing finale so polyphonically informed, yet without sacrificing sweep and energy… Schiff slowly unfolds Op 54's Allegretto, eschewing nimble virtuosity while emphasising inner voices and off-beat accents, and finally lets loose in time for the coda.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2008 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Beethoven - Piano Sonatas Volume 3
“The god of inspiration sprints hand in hand with Garrick Ohlsson as the pianist nears completion of his Beethoven sonata cycle… Ohlsson plays Op. 14 No. 1 beautifully, bringing a refreshingly terse quality to the Allegretto by underlining its sudden dynamic shifts.” Classics Today “As a pupil and disciple of Claudio Arrau. Ohlsson cultivates a richness of tone which some listeners might find too Brahmsian. But besides the depth, Ohlsson plays crisply, and is never in danger of giving this music airs that it doesn’t have.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2008 ***** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
