Tallis Scholars, Peter Phillips (director) Recorded in the Church of St John at Hackney and in Tewkesbury Abbey “England has never produced a greater composer than William Byrd. His music for the Anglican Church has
been sung without interruption since the 16th century. In stark contrast his Catholic music was not heard for over
300 years. This selection compares the formal public style of Byrd’s Anglican works like The Great Service
with the plangent intimacy of his Masses and motets.” Peter Phillips “This will delight fans of Byrd and this choir. Compelling performances (especially Ave verum) and a resonant if slightly distant sound. Some pieces though (the Mass a 5) have a surface, rather than inner, drive.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2008 **** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | 1605 Treason & DischordWilliam Byrd and the Gunpowder Plot
The King's Singers, Concordia Commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot, the King's Singers and Concordia illuminate the dangers of hearing Mass in secret, of conspiracy and downfall and of Protestant relief and great joy. Structured around Byrd's perfect 4-part Mass, the CD contains motets by Catholic composers, Protestant anthems celebrating the downfall of the plot and a commission from the British composer, Francis Pott, Master Tresham: His Ducke. A script, drawing on historic texts, reproduced in the CD booklet, uses the dramatised persona of Byrd to recreate the atmosphere of change and hope in the Jacobean court. "this is a serious project, which, like the plotters themselves, has been skilfully executed. Strongly recommended" International Record Review | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
