Alexis Weissenberg (piano) “Weissenberg has a remarkable talent, as the three Petrushka pieces prove, but he has often misused it, with harsh results. This sampling of his repertoire and his thoughts on it is worth seeing.” BBC Music Magazine, Proms 2008 **** |

| | | Artur Schnabel plays Bach
Bach, J S: | Italian Concerto, BWV971 Recorded 11th November 1938, London Chromatic Fantasia & Fugue in D minor, BWV903 Recorded 15th-16th June 1948, London Prelude & Fugue Book 1 No. 5 in D major, BWV850 Recorded 13th June 1950, London Toccata in C minor, BWV911 Recorded 24th November 1937, London Toccata in D major, BWV912 Recorded 24th November 1937, London Concerto for Two Keyboards in C major, BMV1061 Recorded 28th October 1936, London with Karl Ulrich Schnabel (piano) London Symphony Orchestra, Adrian Boult |
This release contains all of Schnabel’s commercial disc recordings of the works of J. S. Bach, a composer whose keyboard music the pianist felt was too intimate for performance in the concert hall. One of Schnabel’s greatest talents was the ability to employ not only seemingly natural tempos but, more importantly, the perfect tempo relationship between sections and movements. The Prelude and Fugue from The Well-Tempered Clavier was the last recording Schnabel made before his death in 1951. Of the recording of the Toccata in C minor, BWV 911, one critic wrote upon its release, “Schnabel has rarely made a more satisfying recording than this. He refuses speed and brilliance to the opening Allegro moderato, taking it more slowly than is usual… he makes the transition to the Adagio seem inevitably right.” | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Bach Performance On The Piano - Angela Hewitt Live In Concert
Subtitles: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Chinese (simplified and traditional), Russian, Japanese
Angela Hewitt shares the inspiration and experience behind her award-winning playing in an illustrated lecture that explains the technical and practical steps essential for performing Bach on the piano.
Angela Hewitt is a phenomenal artist who has established herself at the highest level over the last few years not least through her superb, award-winning recordings for Hyperion. Completed in 2005, her eleven-year project to record all the major keyboard works of Bach has been described as ‘one of the record glories of our age’ and has won her a huge following. She has been hailed as ‘the pre-eminent Bach pianist of our time’ and ‘nothing less than the pianist who will define Bach performance on the piano for years to come’ (Stereophile). Now for the first time she appears on a 2-DVD set. In the first disc, she conducts a ‘masterclass’, discussing all the challenges, possible pitfalls and delights in performing Bach on the piano. The second disc features Hewitt live in concert. This is an unmissable release. “Illuminating lectures rather regally delivered but the playing is spellbinding.” Gramophone Magazine, April 2008 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
