Born in Holland in 1915 Gre Brouwenstijn was to become one of the finest lyric sopranos of her generation. She was equally at home singing Mozart or Verdi and later in her career added Wagnerian roles to her extensive repertoire. She retired from the operatic stage in 1971 and died in Amsterdam in 1999.
