Harmonia Mundi: HMC905266Sammartini - Sonatas for recorder & bass continuo
His brother, Giovanni Battista, was one of the fathers of the modern symphony; like him and like their father Alexis de Saint-Martin, Giuseppe Sammartini was a virtuoso oboist. But he chose to make his career at the court of the Prince of Wales, in London. Surrounded by a group of exceptional musicians, Maurice Steger gives us a chance to discover seven of his sonatas for recorder and continuo which, though composed in England, clearly proclaim their Italian origins! A treat for the ears, and a dazzling display of virtuosity. With Sergio Ciomei (harpsichord & organ), Mauro Valli (cello), Christian Beuse (bassoon), Margret Köll (harp), Eduardo Egüez (theorbo & guitar) & Naoki Kitaya (organ).

Press comments: "Maurice Steger's dazzling debut performance ... Now the world's leading recorder virtuoso ... Gorgeous." Anna Picard, Independent on Sunday "Steger’s recorder-playing is by far the finest of any on the discs in this round-up. He is dramatic, caressing, forceful, virtuosic and playful by turns. One could almost call him the Roger Federer of the recorder.” Andrew O’Connor, International Record Review
