Lasso: Penitential Psalms Nos. 1-7

A total work of art.

When his Penitential Psalms were published in Munich in 1584, Orlande de Lassus was the most famous composer in Europe. The work had been composed 25 years earlier, but it did not show its age in the slightest. And, four centuries later, this collection still rouses the admiration of musicologists and the astonishment of performers and listeners, for the pure musical beauty of ‘abstract’ polyphony is here matchlessly combined with the expressive possibilities of speech.

Collegium Vocale Gent, Philippe Herreweghe

“It is Collegium Vocale's ability to bring out such subtleties by means of minutely controlled dynamics or perfectly timed pauses that shows these pieces burning with a fierce, dark intensity.” Daily Telegraph

“particularly beautifully recorded…those who want a clear ravishing sound will go for the Herreweghe” BBC Music Magazine Benchmark Recording

“Collegium Vocale is impeccably in tune and immaculate in ensemble. Herreweghe conducts them with his customary suave and unhurried approach to Renaissance sacred music” International Record Review

“A fastidious account that is unlikely to age or be superseded anytime soon.” Gramophone Magazine
