Plácido Domingo, Nancy Herrera, Mariola Cantarero & José Bros Jesús López Cobos THE STORY: Set in Madrid (Acts 1 & 2) and Extremedura (Act 3) in 1868-69, during a time of unrest in Spain known as the “Revolución Gloriosa”, the plot of this zarzuela is one of love and politics: two men on opposite sides of the political divide (monarchist and liberal – see cover) are enemies in the Revolution and rivals for the hand of the seamstress Luisa Fernanda. THE MUSIC: Wonderfully evocative of Spain, with its characteristic rhythms, melodies and instrumental colours. Moreno Torroba’s melodic gifts are especially striking. There are also reminiscences of Massenet and Gounod, not to mention Puccini’s Tosca! Best known is the Harvesters’ Chorus from Act 3. “This near all-Spanish production is vibrant, passionate and convincing. There is some enchanting music, and the stirring Act I aria is full of pride, passion, sorrow and manly wistfulness. But it is Domingo’s well-sketched Vidal that breaks the heart.” The Times, 21st June 2008 **** “…melody and dance rule, but there are passages of drama and emotional power that demand, and receive, the full weight of Plácido Domingo's artistry. The cast is consistently strong, with José Bros brilliant as the tenor bad guy who gets the girl, Nancy Herrera spirited and elegant in the mezzo title role... Jesús López-Cobos conducts... with flair and sensitivity.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2008 ***** |
