Russian pianist and composer. He travelled widely giving concerts and had a reputation as a n exceptional pianist. He had particularly big hands. His composing career got of to a bad start when his First Symphony flopped after a poorly played performance. His Piano Concertos, especially the second, have enjoyed huge popularity, as has his Second Symphony. He retained a distinctively romantic and emotional style while his contemtively romantic and emotinal style while his contemphories were exploring new idioms. He left Russia on the outbreak of the 1917 Revolution and never returned.
