One of the group of Russian nationalistic composers known as 'The Five'. His operas Boris Godunov draws on the folk music and literature of his country. His piano pieces Pictures at an Exhibition-the first piano pieces of real significance by a Russian composer-have enjoyed huge success in the orchestration by Ravel. He led a rather disordered life and died an alcoholic.
