(1854-1928)

Leos Janacek (1854-1928)

A Czech composer who enjoyed success late in life. He drew particular inspiration from the rhythmic and melodic aspects of speech which he worked into his own characteristic operatic style. He is best known for his operas Jenufa, The Makropoulos Case, and The Cunning Little Vixen. He also wrote some nationalistic works, notably his Sinfonietta for orchestra.
