(revised version)

City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Simon Rattle

At no time in its long history did European music go through a period of such revolution and diversification as in the 20th Century.

Wagner had transformed music in the 19th century to the extent that every composer coming after had to acknowledge his existence, to a lesser or greater extent.

The advent of the new century saw a great flourishing of compositional styles and techniques that were largely the direct result of Wagner's influence.

Not only that, the new century was to be one of great technological advance and invention. The gramophone and, later, the spread of radio, brought about massive changes in the way that ordinary people accessed and perceived music. Suddenly a whole new world of serious music was to open up to an audience that had hitherto been excluded from what had previously been, albeit unintentionally, an elitist art form.

The works in this set of 16 CDs have been arranged in strict chronological order of composition and the first disc begins with a work from 1901 that has become one of the most popular works in the classical repertoire, mainly through it's use in another great 20th-century art form – the film: Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto.

Thereafter each disc in the set takes the listener on a fascinating journey through the century, composer by composer and work by work, from Russian Romanticism, French Impressionism, English Pastoralism, Atonalism, Neo Classicism right up to Post Modernism, and from as wide a range of countries and genres as possible.

Discover Film Music

Discover Film Music

Includes music by Steiner, Korngold, Herrmann, Newman, Copland, Williams, Barry, Elfman, Walton, Shostakovich, Morricone, Auric and others.

The ‘Discover’ series opens the door to key areas of classical music. Through a combination of illustrative music tracks and a richly filled booklet, the exploration is both revealing and enjoyable.

As the twentieth century approached, a new art form was developed, one that would go on to dominate the next hundred years.

Though cinema began in silence, it quickly acquired sound and attracted musicians and composers. The new medium demanded a new approach, both aesthetically and technologically, but these problems were overcome remarkably quickly, allowing film composition to develop into a sophisticated branch of music-drama.

This booklet-and-CD set outlines the history of film music, introduces some of the major characters, and shows how their music works in the context of film.

Symphony No. 3 'The Camp Meeting'

Celia Nicklin (oboe & cor anglais) & Michael Laird (trumpet)

Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Sir Neville Marriner

Recorded: Smith Square, London, October 1975

“Few anthologies find room for a symphony; but this one does, and in doing so offers us a very good one, Ives's Third: three gently affectionate movements (for once no jokes, no revolutions) ... it is music of great charm, and given exactly that quality in the continuously eloquent performance of Neville Marriner's Academy... there is also playing of the very first order in Barber's Adagio, with an intensity of string tone at the climax hardly to be believed possible with the number of players likely involved. The Copland is splendid too, trumpet and cor anglais exceptionally well balanced with each other - projecting their solos with a long-lined beauty matching that of the string players. Creston's A Rumour is in a sense a party piece for the orchestra... perhaps in this little piece Creston has produced the record's second triumph of good nature; hardly comparable in scope with the Ives, but an effective one nevertheless. Its performance and recording are of an equal standard to that of the whole disc: impeccable”. Gramophone July 1976

Quiet City

Letitia Singleton (Dinah); Sebastien Lemoine (Sam); Céline Victores-Benavente, Philippe Do,Vincent Ordonneau (trio); David Guerrier (trumpet); Anne Clément (cor anglais)

Orchestre de Picardie, Pascal Verrot

Trouble in Tahiti is a brief 'opera' of 40 minutes by Leonard Bernstein who wrote both text and music. The work can be considered to represent the seedy underside of the enchanted dreams of Broadway and Hollywood. The cast is restricted to two characters and a vocal trio which comments on the action like a Greek chorus. Scored for a small orchestra, it provides both continuity and contrast between the elegant jazzy passages for the vocal trio and the arias or duets conveying the middle-class distress of the two protagonists.

Keeping Score: Revolutions in Music - Copland and the American Sound

Keeping Score: Revolutions in Music - Copland and the American Sound

Copland:

Appalachian Spring

San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Michael Tilson Thomas

Aaron Copland's music reflects the transformation of the American experience that took place during his lifetime. Born in 1900 in Brooklyn, he witnessed the wild confidence of the Jazz Age, the fears of the Great Depression, and the rallying of the nation as it entered World War II. His ideal was to write music that would express how it felt to live those experiences. Copland wrote classical music in his own special way. He transformed it to capture the energy of American's bustling cities and the vast quiet of its empty plains. He created a musical style that evoked the diversity of the American people. The sounds of Jewish music, African-American jazz, folk songs, cowboy ballads, and Latin American dances all played their parts in his compositions, which he hoped would bring people together in times of crises. Today, Copland's music seems comforting and celebratory. Sixty years ago it was a wake-up call that gave Americans a critical sense of their own identity. Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony explore the music of Copland and the cityscapes, landscapes, and social and political developments that shaped it.
