Pamela Thorby (soprano recorder), Rachel Podger (violin), Joanna Levine (cello) & William Carter (theorbo) The Palladian Ensemble An Excess of Pleasure / The Winged Lion brings together the music of 17th century Venice and the albums that launched the Palladian Ensemble onto the international music scene. “An Excess of Pleasure” was awarded Gramophone "Editor's Choice" and both albums were awarded the Diapason d’Or The Palladian Ensemble (originally Rachel Podger, Pamela Thorby, Joanna Levine and William Carter) was a double-award winning group even before they released their first album, and made their Wigmore Hall debut in 1993. Gamba player Susanne Heinrich and the prize-winning violinist Rodolfo Richter replaced Joanna Levine and Rachel Podger, but the Palladian Ensemble continued to tour extensively throughout the UK enjoying consistent popularity with audiences and critics. The Palladian Ensemble were five times winners of the prestigious Diapason d'Or Award, (1993, 1994, 1998, 1999 and 2000) and twice had albums named Gramophone "Editor's Choice". “Sparkling playing with the sense of uninhibited joy which only technical mastery and unbridled imagination can generate.” BBC Music Magazine |

| | | Garden of Early Delights
Pamela Thorby (recorders) and Andrew Lawrence-King (harps and psaltery) Garden of Early Delights is a mixed bouquet of diverse, joyous, unusual and eloquent pieces from the Renaissance and
Early Baroque periods. Performed by Pamela Thorby on recorders and Andrew Lawrence-King on harps and psaltery,
these are two virtuosic musicians unsurpassed in their respective fields. “Pamela Thorby's tone is silvery, alert and her intonation is impeccable” BBC Music Magazine “Whether on soprano, alto or tenor recorder, Pamela Thorby's tone has a limpid clarity which gives a crisp filigree-like quality to even the most fast and furious figurations...This crystalline sound is equally successful in conveying the melancholy expressiveness of slower and less highly ornamented items such as Van Eyck's arrangement of Caccini's Amarilli.” The Telegraph, 5th July 2008 “Thorby's playing exhibits a vitality, exuberance and earthiness that reminds me of the great David Munrow.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2008 ***** “Recorded sound is nothing short of stunning, while the cover image of a hummingbird nicely encapsulates Thorby's lightness and agility as she darts from piece to piece to extract its nectar. This is Paradise indeed.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2008 |
