A live and televised recording from this year's BBC Proms performance on 5th August by the most famous a cappella group ever: the King's Singers. Regularly performing in excess of 100 concerts every season complemented by recording and teaching, The King's Singers delight audiences around the world with their incomparable musicianship, charm and wit. With the recent album release Landscape and Time having been described as possessing "singing of rare distinction", and "stunningly high musical standards", they have maintained their place at the apex of a cappella singing, and are counted amongst the world's elite classical performers. Continuing Signum's release series in celebration of the group's 40th Anniversary year, Simple Gifts (SIGCD121) and a 5-CD ‘best of’ (SIGCD120), this performance was in many ways a retrospective of the groups musical history, encompassing some of the earliest arrangements that the original line-up performed right up to contemporary works that they recently commissioned. Available on CD and DVD, the DVD includes extra interviews with the group from Suzy Klein and Gareth Malone, star of BBC series The Choir, and can also be enjoyed in 5.1 surround sound. CONCERT REVIEW: "In an exquisitely programmed concert, there was music ranging from the Renaissance to the present, including the opening selection of Poulenc's witty “Chansons françaises" and various Victorian parlour songs "in the biggest Victorian parlour ever built." …the pure quality of the vocal balance is quite extraordinary. The King's Singers had travelled back in time some 400 years (who needs Dr Who at the Proms?). Then followed an example of the many works the group has commissioned, John McCabe's haunting evocation of American wastelands, "Scenes in America deserta", based on the writings of architectural historian Reyner Banham. McCabe took his bow. The evening ended with folksongs arranged by Gordon Langford and members of the group, Bob Chilcott (who left in 1997) and current baritone Philip Lawson. Langford's "Widdicombe" Fair played to the group's effortless resource of funny voices and genial comedy. The encore was Arthur Sullivan's arrangement of "The Long Day Closes", apposite for a concert finishing at fifteen minutes short of midnight and perfectly judged in this performance." | | | The Golden Age
In the run up to their 40th Anniversay on May 1st the Kings Singers present the first of two albums on Signum Classics. Portugese, Spanish and Mexican music imbued with religious sensuousness from the 16th Century - the Siglo de Oro - performed by the world's most prestigious a cappella ensemble. This release mixes Hispanic music from both sides of the Atlantic with composers including Lobo, Vivanco, Morales, Victoria and Melgas. “Despite many changes of personnel over the past 40 years, the King's Singers maintain their unmistakable cool timbre, faultless intonation and smooth blend - almost too smooth at times in these examples of passionate, sensuous 16th-century Spanish, Portuguese and Mexican polyphony, the first release marking their anniversary...The Golden Age represents the Singers' bedrock repertoire - great examples of unaccompanied choral music sung with precision and insight by masters of their art.” The Observer, 27th April 2008 “The King's Singers perform with their customary clarity of line, rhythmic grace and attention to detail.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2008 “Lamentations can be glorious when delivered by these wonderful singers.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2008 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | The King’s Singers 40th Anniversary Edition Greatest Hits
This double-album compilation from EMI’s back-catalogue coincides happily with our 40th anniversary. What you are perhaps already listening to is a good representation of the various incarnations of the group up until about 15 years ago. That’s not to say that we don’t sing any of these pieces any more, because we do - much of it is core repertoire often requested and often performed. This compilation therefore helps to re-emphasise the point that although the individual voices of the group have changed from time to time, the principles of what we do have always remained the same: we endeavour to convey a love of our music, maintain a homogenous blend and balance combined with flawless intonation, and when appropriate present it with that special dry British sense of humour. Those principles were learnt by the original members of the group in the 1960s whilst they were students at King’s College, Cambridge, singing both in the choir and in other less formal societies. By giving concerts today in that magnificent chapel the link between The King’s Singers and King’s College is still strong, despite the fact that over the 40 years many of the group’s new members (and there have been just 13) weren’t actually students there. What we can say however is that every King’s Singer received the same style of musical upbringing, rooted in the unique English choral tradition which gave us, as boys, skills we draw on every day of our performing lives. Our touring schedule keeps us on the road for at least six months a year performing up to 120 concerts, from Anchorage to the Azores, Beirut to Beijing, Cape Town to Copenhagen, and so on... When time permits we love to listen to choirs young and old anywhere in the world to help them make the most of ensemble singing. We get as much out of this as the choirs themselves, and certainly make many new friends.Of course recording is a staple part of our work. Since the EMI days we have released at least 2 new albums a year, so that the group’s 100th recording isn’t that far away. Our repertoire expands with each new disc, reflecting the different styles and genres we are comfortable singing in: madrigals, folk songs, jazz and pop; romantic, religious and contemporary. Commissioning has always been important, partly because we have an unusual voice distribution (2 countertenors, 1 tenor, 2 baritones and a bass), and it is a special thrill to invite “big name composers” to write for us and to get to another world premiere performance. It has been our pleasure also to collaborate on projects with some of the best musicians in the world. “Avoiding constant superlatives is difficult if not impossible in describing The King’s Singers. They really must be heard to be believed.” The Washington Post | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Thomas Linley junior - The Song of Moses
Julia Gooding (soprano), Sophie Daneman (soprano), Robin Blaze (tenor), Andrew King (tenor) & Andrew Dale Forbes (bass) Holst Singers & The Parley of Instruments, Peter Holman Thomas Linley was born in Bath into a highly musical family. Had he not died tragically young in a boating accident it seems likely that he would have won for himself a far greater name. He travelled widely, was a friend of Mozart (who commented that ‘had he lived, he would have been one of the greatest ornaments of the musical world’), and was widely mourned. The Song of Moses was one of his last works. A grand oratorio in Handelian style, it contains a varied range of arias alongside choruses which are at once expertly written and intensely dramatic (something here developed to the full by the Holst Singers). The story is taken from Exodus (Chapter 15) and concentrates on the Israelites’ rejoicing after the Red Sea was closed over the pursuing Egyptian forces—much the same as Handel’s Israel in Egypt. This recording is the work’s first performance since 1778. Let God arise is an earlier work, one of his first surviving compositions of any size, and is a large-scale anthem after the style of Handel or Boyce. Again the choruses have real strength and contrapuntal power, and the arias show a skill rare in one so young. “One of the best finds yet in Hyperion’s English Orpheus series” Gramophone Magazine “Linley might well have been an English answer to Mozart, as this fine short oratorio shows” Daily Mail “Another indispensable release in the English Orpheus series. The adventurous will find their curiosity amply rewarded” Classic CD |
