Kiri te Kanawa

Soprano

Kiri te Kanawa

Blessed with one of the most beautiful soprano voice of her generation, this New Zealand native has been featured on countless Decca recordings ranging from opera to popular song. She has given us her immortal ‘Desdemona’ in Verdi’s "Otello" (with Solti and Pavarotti) Mozart’s Countess in Figaro, two Strauss heroines, "Arabella" and "Capriccio" and a variety of oratorios and recitals. Though she hinted that her famous 50th birthday concert recorded on Decca would signal the swansong of her career, Dame Kiri (as is the prerogative of any soprano!) has to everyone’s delight decided "not yet" and continues to concertise and sing opera around the world.

Plácido Domingo, Kiri Te Kanawa & Sergei Leiferkus

The Royal Opera & The Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Georg Solti

Recorded live at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London on 23rd & 27th October 1992.

‘Pure gold from the top team… Here was an evening to cherish, one to go straight into the memory in firmest indelible ink… The combination of Domingo and Solti promised gold and delivered every ounce expected.’ The Times

“The great work and the great performance; and, crucially, both gain from the filming. …is deeply impressive, and moving, to see how completely Domingo lives his role Te Kanawa too shows herself alive to every suggestion of her music and words.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2008

“Sergei Leiferkus's dark Russian tone… suits Iago down to the ground. Kiri Te Kanawa's limpid tone makes her a near-ideal Desdemona… Plácido Domingo… is noble and heroic.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2008 *****

Kiri Te Kanawa

Dame Kiri’s voice is multi-tracked. ‘Nine versions of me,’ explains the New Zealand superstar. ‘We call it the Kiri Chorus!’ Jenkins found the results fascinating. ‘We’ve laid her upon herself and the sound’s quite magical. It’s different to anything else. It’s not done in a pop way where people very often add vibrato and make it match so that the voice is pulsing on the wave. She just sings it – and she sings it how she feels it. Against that, when we need a more kind of tribal earthy kind of element, I’ve used some Adiemus style voices.’

Directed by Christopher Swann

“A judiciously edited…intriguing….amusing glimpse of artistic temperaments at work.” - The New York Times

“Christopher Swann's 1985 film of the sessions for a new recording of West Side Story repays repeated viewing. Bernstein, conducting his musical for the first time, alternates between thunderclouds and sunshine as he whips his top-flight scratch band into shape and exuberantly encourages his unlikely cast of singers to new heights.” Gramophone Magazine, April 2008
