Edita Gruberová (born December 23, 1946, Bratislava) is a Slovak soprano who is one of the most acclaimed coloraturas of recent decades. She is noted for her great tonal clarity, agility, and ability to sing high notes with great power, which made her an ideal Queen of the Night in her early years. In recent years, she has enjoyed great success with a number of the most important bel canto roles.
Gruberová has made many recordings, most notably in recent years full-length recordings and extended selections from Donizetti's Tudor Queens trilogy and other bel canto operas, lately exclusively on Nightingale label. More than a dozen of her filmed and televised opera appearances have been released on DVD, including Norma, Manon, and Linda di Chamounix. |

Gundula Janowitz, Edita Gruberova, Bernd Weikl and Rene Kollo Wiener Philharmoniker, Sir Georg Solti The only film version available of this opera, the celebrated director Otto Schenk’s intimate film of Strauss’s comedy of manners, set in mid-19th century Vienna. Schenk’s beautiful staging uses traditional sets and costumes, making this a classic, historic and faithful account. “Schenk's direction is stodgy, but authentic settings and a superb cast, with Janowitz in angelic voice and Solti at his Straussian finest make this the best Arabella in any medium. Michael Scott Rohan” BBC Music Magazine, June 2008 ***** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Primadonna / Ariadne Jessye Norman, Komponist Julia Varady, Zerbinetta Edita Gruberova, Tenor / Bacchus Paul Frey, Musiklehrer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau & Haushofmeister Rudolf Asmus Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Kurt Masur 2 CDs with complete libretto at mid price for first time! "... where the recording scores most convincingly ... is in the casting of Ariadne and Bacchus. Jessye Norman brings to the title-role opulence of tone, nobility of phrasing and Straussian richness ... and Norman gives us the classical dignity and tragedy of the role in generous measure ... Paul Frey ... really sings the role, riding the climaxes effortlessly and tunefully and, with Norman, making the final duet the ecstatic experience Strauss had in mind but which so rarely materialises ... the playing of the instrumentalists from the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra is exemplary ... there's no doubt in my mind that this is an Ariadne with outstanding virtues.” Gramophone November 1988 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
