Puccini: Madama Butterfly

Puccini: Madama Butterfly

Maria Callas, Lucia Danieli, Nicolai Gedda, Luisa Villa, Mario Borriello, Renato Ercolani, Mario Carlin, Plinio Clabassi & Enrico Campi

Coro e Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala di Milano, Herbert von Karajan

This 1955 La Scala recording, with its matchless pairing of Callas and Karajan, dates from 1955.

The Callas authority Tony Locantro contributes a wide-ranging essay that considers Callas’s Puccini roles on stage and in the studio (with the odd lawsuit along the way).

As he notes, Puccini was not a composer that Maria Callas particularly favoured in her stage repertoire, and yet two of his operas – Tosca and Turandot – played a major part in her career. In the recording studio, however, Callas showed a great affinity with Puccini’s heroines and made a number of outstanding recordings of his music, including La boh่me, Madama Butterfly and Manon Lescaut in addition to her stage roles of Tosca and Turandot.

Callas had never sung Butterfly on stage when she made her recording, yet the studio performance shows a complete understanding of the musical and dramatic requirements of the role. She brings the character to life so vividly that one might assume that she had honed the interpretation over many performances in the theatre.

This vintage mono recording has been newly remastered to ART standard at Abbey Road.

Maria Callas, Giuseppe di Stefano, Tito Gobbi & Nicolai Gedda

This 2 CD set is one of four special albums being released by EMI Classics on 8 September 2008 to celebrate the 150th Anniversary on 22 December of the birth of Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924)

Puccini is one of today’s most popular operatic composers. His works dominate the programmes of the world’s leading opera houses, and his compositions are heard frequently on radio and television, in film soundtracks and in TV commercials.

Maria Callas is an iconic figure in the world of opera and she continues to be acclaimed as one of the greatest interpreters of the music of Puccini in living memory.

All of Puccini’s well known operas are represented, including Manon Lescaut, La boh่me, Tosca, Madama Butterfly and Turandot and the less frequently performed Il trittico (Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi).

The programme covers all of Puccini’s main soprano arias as well as the principal love duets, in which Callas is joined by her regular partner on records Giuseppe di Stefano in several items as well as by Nicolai Gedda in Madama Butterfly and Eugenio Fernandi in Turandot.

In his note, ‘La boh่me: A tale of two Mim์s’, Stephen Jay-Taylor tells the story. ‘This recording, notable for the youthful freshness of its twin protagonists and the airy impulse of its conducting, might well seem to be the happy product of everything proceeding according to plan. In fact, it was the end result of more than three years of deaths, defections and dismissal.’ It began in 1960 with a plan to rerecord Beecham’s classic 1956 account in stereo. But Beecham was dying and B๖jrling died, so sessions were scheduled for 1961 with Victoria de los Angeles and Franco Corelli as the principals. However, Corelli proved impossible to pin down. Then, with Gedda brought in as EMI’s all-repertoire house tenor, the apparently barren de los Angeles fell pregnant – only to do so again come the final rescheduling in 1963. This was Freni’s chance: ‘She had already made well-received debuts at Glyndebourne and Covent Garden...and the sessions proceeded without a hitch, in Olof’s exquisitely crafted, beautifully detailed stereo production. The set...met with considerable acclaim, most of it occasioned by Freni’s meltingly lovely, vernal Mim์’.

“There are many lovely things about this set - the radiant Mimi of Mirella Freni, and the ardent Rodolo of Nicolai Gedda. Schipper's conducting is interesting, but the smaller parts are weakly cast.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2007 ****
