Plácido Domingo, Nancy Herrera, Mariola Cantarero & José Bros Jesús López Cobos THE STORY: Set in Madrid (Acts 1 & 2) and Extremedura (Act 3) in 1868-69, during a time of unrest in Spain known as the “Revolución Gloriosa”, the plot of this zarzuela is one of love and politics: two men on opposite sides of the political divide (monarchist and liberal – see cover) are enemies in the Revolution and rivals for the hand of the seamstress Luisa Fernanda. THE MUSIC: Wonderfully evocative of Spain, with its characteristic rhythms, melodies and instrumental colours. Moreno Torroba’s melodic gifts are especially striking. There are also reminiscences of Massenet and Gounod, not to mention Puccini’s Tosca! Best known is the Harvesters’ Chorus from Act 3. “This near all-Spanish production is vibrant, passionate and convincing. There is some enchanting music, and the stirring Act I aria is full of pride, passion, sorrow and manly wistfulness. But it is Domingo’s well-sketched Vidal that breaks the heart.” The Times, 21st June 2008 **** “…melody and dance rule, but there are passages of drama and emotional power that demand, and receive, the full weight of Plácido Domingo's artistry. The cast is consistently strong, with José Bros brilliant as the tenor bad guy who gets the girl, Nancy Herrera spirited and elegant in the mezzo title role... Jesús López-Cobos conducts... with flair and sensitivity.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2008 ***** |

| | | Placido Domingo - Pasion Española
Plácido Domingo (tenor) Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid, Miguel Roa “Whatever the quality of these Spanish coplas and pasodobles, [Domingo's] singing of them is entirely beguiling, effortlessly idiomatic and committed. “You have to feel [them] passionately and sing with spirit, with feeling and conviction,” he writes in the booklet. “The text and the sense of the words are extremely important.”” Sunday Times, 18th May 2008 **** “the ageless Domingo returns to his Madrid roots with the up-and-coming Orquesta de la Comunidad under Miguel Roa in these ethnic ditties that capture an endearing corner of this great tenor's musical personality.” The Observer, 13th April 2008 “The great Domingo goes back to his roots for a Spanish 'soul' sessoin. ” Gramophone Magazine, June 2008 “The popular Spanish form of the copla is celebrated by Plácido Domingo. These are almost entirely songs about love, mostly unhappy, in which a man behaves badly to a woman, or vice versa. Domingo sounds idiomatic and perfectly accomplished in this material, and so does the orchestra. Those with an ear for Spanish popular music will not be disappointed by this disc.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2008 **** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Plácido Domingo, Kiri Te Kanawa & Sergei Leiferkus The Royal Opera & The Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Georg Solti Recorded live at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden,
London on 23rd & 27th October 1992. ‘Pure gold from the top team… Here was an evening to cherish, one to go straight into the memory in firmest indelible ink… The combination of Domingo and Solti promised gold and delivered every ounce expected.’ The Times “The great work and the great performance; and, crucially, both gain from the filming. …is deeply impressive, and moving, to see how completely Domingo lives his role Te Kanawa too shows herself alive to every suggestion of her music and words.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2008 “Sergei Leiferkus's dark Russian tone… suits Iago down to the ground. Kiri Te Kanawa's limpid tone makes her a near-ideal Desdemona… Plácido Domingo… is noble and heroic.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2008 ***** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
