Le Concert Astrée, Emmanuelle Haim

Emmanuelle Haim follows her 2006 recording of Monteverdi’s Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda with an unusual and inventive programme on the theme of the Lamento, the literary and dramatic form that found its seventeenth-century musical archetype in Monteverdi’s celebrated Lamento d’Arianna.

Emmanuelle Haim has taken great care in choosing 9 soloists to perform these demanding works amongst which Véronique Gens sings the Lamento d’Arianna, the tantalising fragment from Monteverdi’s lost opera of 1608; Natalie Dessay is the abandoned nymph in the very different Lamento della ninfa from the Eighth Book of Madrigals. Alongside these familiar works by Monteverdi the programme includes Philippe Jaroussky in Barbara Strozzi’s dramatic monologue L’Eraclito amoroso, probably written for Strozzi herself, Carissimi’s Lamento di Maria Stuarda (with Patrizia Ciofi) and Strozzi’s teacher Cavalli’s Lamento d’Egisto (with Rolando Villazón, who also sings Orfeo’s Lamento). Joyce DiDonato, recently signed to EMI/Virgin Classics as an exclusive artist, adds Ottavia’s heartrending farewell to Rome from Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea.

“Haim is pure dynamite” Daily Telegraph

“Haim’s meteoric rise has been well charted by the press. It’s easy to understand the excitement - her enthusiasm is infectious, her conducting demeanour distinctive, and her knowledge intense.” Gramophone Magazine

“Waif-like, driven, messianic or explosive, non-conformist, unruly, either way, the conductor Emmanuelle Haim has enough charisma to draw crowds in her wake. Haim is the most dynamic force to have hit the period movement since the 1970s. She’s a born leader” Financial Times

“This all-star cast includes the ravishing Natalie Dessay as Monteverdi's forsaken nymph, Véronique Gens, a proud, desolate Ariadne, and Joyce DiDonato, who sings Octavia's farewell with extraordinary dramatic passion. Much of the interest of this disc lies in its subtleties, Emmanuelle Haïm highlighting telling details...” BBC Music Magazine, November 2008 *****

“A starry host of singers bring their talents to bear on Haïm's programme” Gramophone Magazine, January 2009

Donizetti: La Fille du Régiment

Donizetti: La Fille du Régiment

Stage Director: Laurent Pelly

Natalie Dessay, Juan Diego Flórez, Felicity Palmer, Alessandro Corbelli, Donald Maxwell & Dawn French

Orchestra & Chorus of the Royal Opera House, Bruno Campanella

Live from Covent Garden, Royal Opera House, London – January 2007

“Reactions to Dawn French’s non-singing appearance as an ample and obdurate Duchess of Crackentorp will be, more than usual, a matter of taste...But there can surely be no argument about Dessay. As the regiment’s tomboy handmaiden Marie, pigtail curving, fist punching the air à la Nigel Kennedy, she shows incredible comic verve even when Donizetti’s music sends her voice skyrocketing. Singer, actress, clown: she’s all three. Theatrically, Flórez isn’t even near the same league...[but] the Peruvian star’s grin, sparkle and ringing tenor keep us happy enough. When the nine high Cs of Ah, mes amis! are hit dead in the centre with the ease of a shrug, you know you’re in safe hands. And Tonio suits exactly the singer’s still-boyish charm... It all makes you want to be in the stalls, seeing and breathing every moment.” The Times, 25th April 2008 ****

“Dessay… is such a natural clown, and it is wonderful to behold the way she used little bits of the coloratura to illustrate comic points. Bruno Campanella conducts the Royal Opera forces with a delicate understanding of all the requirements of Donizetti's often exquisite instrumental detail.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2008

“Laurent Pelly's production of Donizetti's opéra comique was one of the highlights of the Royal Opera's 2006-7 season, and viewing this well-produced DVD of the show it's perfectly obvious why. Natalie Dessay's skinny tomboy of a Marie combines a 110 per cent commitment to the physicality of her acting with a coloratura facility that is beyond criticism.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2008 *****

“Ms. Dessay treats opera like a form of theatre in which acting and singing are one” The Times

“This selection of scenes and arias, all very familiar items, is distinguished by the imaginative accompaniments under Evelino Pidò. …here we have one of the great opera personalities of our time - it's a lovely voice, used with a formidable technique.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2008

“Violetta's aria at the end of Act I of La traviata demands the impossible. A lyric voice for 'Ah forse è lui' and then weight and depth and cascading coloratura in 'Sempre libera'. Natalie Dessay has it all… The Mad Scenes from I puritani and Lucia di Lammermoor are just as impressive.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2008 *****

Chœur & Orchestre de l’Opéra de Lyon, Evelino Pidò

“Supreme Natalie. She was the pretext to this Sonnambula performed in concert version at the Opéra de Lyon and later at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées in Paris. Natalie Dessay, all radiance, virtuosity and musicality most naturally triumphed in a repertoire where she has few equals in this day. Not to mention Evelino Pidò’s superb conducting.” - Altamusica.com

“This is a lively, alert Sonnambula. Natalie Dessay is a particularly wakeful Amina, bright-voiced in the French tradition, sensitive and intelligent… Even so, there is not a great deal of imagination in the singing until it comes to the final aria, "Ah, non credea mirarti", and there Dessay does indeed give a most lovely performance, singing with deep feeling and warm tone.” Gramophone Magazine, Janurary 2008

“Evelino Pidò conducts magnificently. Quite simply, Natalie Dessay is the most accomplished and the most affecting Amina on record since Callas.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2007 *****

Le Concert d’Astrée, Emmanuelle Haïm

“…while joyful exhortation courses through the Magnificat, Haïm's approach is not simply about sprung rhythmic gesture. She harnesses and moulds the solos with a kaleidoscopic scheme of voice-types, hand-picked for each movement… Again, it is the solo movements in Dixit Dominus which capture the imagination as they are distilled through Haïm's inimitable operatic flair and dramatic timings, where bite and allure sit in easy juxtaposition.” Gramophone Magazine, Janurary 2008

“Haïm's performances are light-footed and elegantly phrased and her mainly pleasing line-up of soloists is attentive to textural content and word-painting.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2008 ****

Orchestre & Choeurs de l’Opéra de Lyon, Evelino Pidò

Having steadfastly built her reputation as a major performer in the pyrotechnic coloratura roles, Natalie Dessay is at a turning point in her career and is exploring, to great international recognition, the more “lyrical roles”, such as Amina, one of the great Bellini heroines.

After her immense success as Lucia in Paris in the Autumn 2006 under the direction of Evelino Pidò, Natalie Dessay and the Italian maestro furthered their musical collaboration with a concert version of Bellini’s La sonnambula first at Lyon and later in Paris. The recording was made in Lyon on the event of these performances.

Natalie Dessay stars in this critical edition of Bellini’s Sonnambula, which was produced by Alessandro Roccatagliati and Luca Zoppelli. It has restored two major parts of Elvino’s role (the cavatina “Prendi: l’anel ti dono” and the beautiful duettino between Amina and Elvino “Vedi o madre”) to their original tessitura. This edition was first produced in August 2004 in Santa Fe, precisely with Natalie Dessay in the title role under the direction of Evelino Pidò.

Forumopera.com states: “The rest of the cast calls for congratulations: it is of a remarkable level.” Indeed it introduces a young 25 year-old Italian tenor, Francesco Meli, at the threshold of a very promising career, and gathers several talents of the opera world such as Jaël Azzaretti and Sara Miingardo, Carlo Colombari and Paul Gay.

The complete recording was released in November 2007
