Le Concert des Nations, created in 1989 around La Capella Reial de Catalunya, is the youngest of the groups conducted by Jordi Savall. Les Nations, which refers to the work by François Couperin, and are an assembly of "tastes", is also the premonition of an artistic Europe which, centuries old, bears the mark of the Age of Enlightenment.
This group meets the present day need for an orchestra with period instruments, able to perform orchestral and symphonic repertoire from Baroque to Romanticism: 1600 - 1850. Le Concert des Nations is the first orchestra of its kind made up of musicians who originate mainly from Latin countries (Spain, South America, Italy, Portugal, France as well as many other countries). Each musician is a top-level specialist in playing ancient instruments. |

because of tight recording schedules, but also because the night creates an very special quality
of silence...
This double album is the best possible tribute to Alia Vox' short but intense history.
Not just an 'anniversary CD': it is a fascinating musical journey, based not only on existing
material, but also on unreleased recordings (Charpentier - CD2 track 5) and on future albums
(CD2 track 1 was recorded for the upcoming project Jerusalem).
Recordings from the Astrée catalogue are also included in this definitive overview of a major
component of Jordi Savall's creative process: the night. “Jordi Savall's discs can always be relied on to widen listeners' musical horizons in the most enjoyable way possible” Daily Telegraph |

Le Concert des Nations, Jordi Savall The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross was premièred in
Cadiz, a city at the southernmost tip of the Iberian Peninsula.
It was commissioned by a confraternity called the Hermandad
de la Santa Cueva at the end of the 18th century. At this time,
Cadiz was a prosperous and cosmopolitan city and Haydn was famous all over Europe.
For his second recording of this masterpiece, Jordi Savall has decided to play not only on period instruments,
but also in a 'period place', the Santa Cueva Church, in which the première took place in 1786. Moreover,
Jordi Savall has commissioned two texts from the theologist Raimon Panikkar and the writer José Saramago
(Nobel Prize for Literature 1998). Returning to the original context for which Haydn's work was written, he
thought it fitting to invite two great masters of spiritual and humanistic thought of our own day to
complement the brief Biblical quotations with a series of texts and commentaries which reflect their
profound spiritual and humanistic convictions. Follow that! “Savall shows an awareness not only of the music's sense of drama, but also of its nobility of expression, solemnity and imaginative use of sonority. This is as good a performance of the original version of the piece I have heard. ” BBC Music Magazine, November 2007 ***** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

Ferran Savall (vocals) Le Concert des Nations & Hespérion XXI, Jordi Savall This new production from Alia Vox is a novelty in more ways than one. Almost all the music has been written by Jordi Savall, including a number of compositions and improvisations based on arrangements of works by Gesualdo, Monteverdi and Trabaci. It is also an unprecedented encounter between a writer and a musician, both inspired by the figure of a painter. Focussing on seven of the artist's most disturbing works and seven musical 'stanzas', respectively, the French writer Dominique Fernandez and Jordi Savall pay an impassioned tribute to this extraordinary artist through their own literary and musical perspectives on the genius of Caravaggio. Although the instrumental line-up in these compositions has its origins in the 17th century, both the musical language and expression are firmly rooted in the 21st century, Savall pays tribute to such modern composers such as Arvo Pärt, particularly in his approach to improvisation and dissonance, crossing genres, periods and disciplines. As always, Alia Vox presents a lavishly documented album, graced by a wealth of carefully selected illustrations. "SACD sound greatly enhances the immediacy of winds, strings, and Ferran Savall's
bleak voice, in this extraordinary conception." BBC Music Magazine Baroque CD of the Month | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
