| | | Leonard Bernstein
Orchestra of St. Luke's, Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra & City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Paavo Järvi, Leonard Slatkin, Simon Rattle & Dennis Russell Davies Like Gershwin before him, Bernstein (1918-1990) composed music for the concert hall and for musical theatre. Through the Broadway musical West Side Story his name reached a far larger audience than that of virtually every other modern American composer, with the possible exception of Gershwin himself. The pieces on this disc illustrate Bernstein's work in the theatre. Four of the works, the dance episodes from On the Town, the overture to Candide, the suite from West Side Story and 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, were written for the Broadway stage; Facsimile and On the Town are both ballet scores, Mass is a theatre piece for singers, players and dancers and what should have been a purely jazz piece, the Prelude, Fugue and Riffs, ended up being incorporated into the musical comedy Wonderful Town. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Jane Irwin Mezzo (Soprano), Justin Lavender (Tenor), Peter Rose (Bass) City Of Birmingham Symphony Chorus, City Of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Sakari Oramo “Elgar has been a regular and vital part of my musical life in Birmingham, and it has been an honour to share my love of this
powerful, affecting music with the orchestra – of which Elgar was himself the first conductor – as well as our magnificent chorus.
The performances that we have given of Gerontius especially – on the work’s centenary, as well as in Helsinki, Amsterdam and
Berlin – have been among the biggest highlights of my career to date, and always enthusiastically received by audiences
who readily respond to the work’s humanity and spirituality. This year I am delighted to be celebrating the composer’s 150th
birthday in Birmingham with special performances of Gerontius, The Apostles and The Kingdom.” SAKARI ORAMO, 2007 "...the most appealing rendition of the Enigma Variations that I have experienced since Sir Adrian Boult was at the far end of an elongated baton... Birmingham's chorus and orchestra have never sounded better; Jane Irwin, Justin Lavender and Peter Rose are immaculate soloists."

Iwona Sobotka, Katarina Karnéus & Timothy Robinson City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra & City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus, Sir Simon Rattle Recorded 23–25 October 2002 (Harnasie, Hafiz tracks 15-18), 30 June 2004 (Hafiz tracks 19-22), 20 March 2006 (Fairytale Princess) at Symphony Hall, Birmingham The Times gave an ecstatic 5-star review for Rattle’s performances of Harnasie in 2002. It was subsequently recorded at Symphony Hall in Birmingham for this release:
“Simon Rattle’s return “home” for two concerts with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra also means this time a hugely welcome return to the music of Karol Szymanowski ... Rattle delivered a performance of rapturous intensity that will not easily be forgotten … [He] excels in this kind of music, and here Szymanowski’s rich orchestral tapestry had everything from a sense of wild mystery to coruscating brilliance.” BBC Music Magazine

Arleen Augér & Janet Baker City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus & Orchestra, Sir Simon Rattle (Recorded 1986) ‘This is conducting akin to genius, with insights and instincts that can’t be measured by any old yardstick. Rattle’s sense of drama, of apocalyptic events, is so strong that at the final chords one is awed. The CBSO emerges as an orchestra of world class and the CBSO Chorus is magnificent. The recording is superb.’ (The Gramophone) | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Faye Robinson (soprano), Sarah Walker (mezzo-soprano), Jon Garrison (tenor) & John Cheek (bass-baritone) City of Birmingham Chorus & City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Sir Michael Tippett This unique recording was conducted by Sir Michael Tippett himself when he was 85.
