Maria Callas

Soprano

Maria Callas

Maria Callas (December 2, 1923 – September 16, 1977) was an American-born Greek soprano and perhaps the best-known opera singer of the post-World War II period. She combined an impeccable bel canto technique with great dramatic gifts, making her the most famous singing actress of the era. An extremely versatile singer, her repertoire ranged from classical opera seria, such as Spontini's La Vestale, and the belcanto operas of Donizetti and Bellini, to late Verdi and the verismo operas of Puccini.

Bellini: La Sonnambula

Bellini: La Sonnambula

1957 Recording

Maria Callas, Nicola Monti, Fiorenza Cossotto & Nicola Zaccaria

Chorus and Orchestra of La Scala, Milan, Antonino Votto

Visconti’s sensational 1955 production of La Sonnambula for La Scala, Milan, was revived and recorded two years later. As a girl, Callas had fallen in love with the role of Amina; as an adult it suited her voice perfectly, and her interpretation set a benchmark that few have equalled.

Among the many highlights of Callas’s profoundly satisfying performance is her cadenza for Ah non giunge in which she executes a remarkable diminuendo on a stratospheric E-flat, a feat unrivalled in the history of the gramophone.

This is by any standards a classic recording.

“Callas does not appear to ever strain for a note. Her voice is always agile and flexible, with an upper register that is forceful but transparent. Callas always retains her lyric sweetness, She sings with nearly perfect evenness through passages of florid ornamentation.” Audiophile Audition on this recording

Puccini: Turandot

Puccini: Turandot

1957 Recording

Maria Callas, Eugenio Fernandi, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf & Nicola Zaccaria

Chorus and Orchestra of La Scala, Milan, Tullio Serafin

Puccini’s Turandot, first performed in 1926, was the only work in which Callas sang that was younger than herself and is a perfect vehicle for a dramatic soprano with a steady, steely and brilliant voice capable of rising to top C. Although she had last sung the strenuously demanding title rôle on stage in 1949, her subtlety in is apparent in this dramatically and musically effective 1957 recording.

Schwarzkopf (Liu) and Fernandi (Calaf) perfectly complement Callas as the legendary Chinese princess whose icy heart is melted by the power of love.

"Callas had not performed the role of the formidable princess for eight years, but her first entrance in ‘In questa reggia’ is commanding… the taxing high tessitura seems to pose her relatively few problems…Not a role that was central to Callas’s repertoire but a good example of her ability to breathe new life into an old warhorse.” MusicWeb International on a previous issue

Puccini: Madama Butterfly

Puccini: Madama Butterfly

Maria Callas, Lucia Danieli, Nicolai Gedda, Luisa Villa, Mario Borriello, Renato Ercolani, Mario Carlin, Plinio Clabassi & Enrico Campi

Coro e Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala di Milano, Herbert von Karajan

This 1955 La Scala recording, with its matchless pairing of Callas and Karajan, dates from 1955.

The Callas authority Tony Locantro contributes a wide-ranging essay that considers Callas’s Puccini roles on stage and in the studio (with the odd lawsuit along the way).

As he notes, Puccini was not a composer that Maria Callas particularly favoured in her stage repertoire, and yet two of his operas – Tosca and Turandot – played a major part in her career. In the recording studio, however, Callas showed a great affinity with Puccini’s heroines and made a number of outstanding recordings of his music, including La bohème, Madama Butterfly and Manon Lescaut in addition to her stage roles of Tosca and Turandot.

Callas had never sung Butterfly on stage when she made her recording, yet the studio performance shows a complete understanding of the musical and dramatic requirements of the role. She brings the character to life so vividly that one might assume that she had honed the interpretation over many performances in the theatre.

This vintage mono recording has been newly remastered to ART standard at Abbey Road.

Verdi: Un ballo in maschera

Verdi: Un ballo in maschera

Maria Callas, Giuseppe Di Stefano, Ettore Bastiannini & Giluietta Simionato

Chorus & Orchestra La Scala, Milan, Gianandrea Gavazzeni

Callas live, and at the peak of her powers – inspired performances that put her studio sets in the shade…. In the case of Ballo the context of an evening in the theatre makes this a more arresting, vivid interpretation on all sides than its studio counterpart of a year earlier, with Gianandrea Gavazzeni galvanising his fine cast to great things. As the late John Ardoin put it in his study of Callas’s recordings: ‘The La Scala performance is sung with more vivid colours, with accents more etched and a general intensification of Verdi’s drama.’ …. Ettore Bastianini’s forthright Renato, the only role he sang in London and one of his best in an all too short career, and Giulietta Simionato’s classic Ulrica are huge assets.” (Gramophone)

Rossini: Il barbiere di Siviglia

Rossini: Il barbiere di Siviglia

Maria Callas, Luigi Alva, Tito Gobbi, Fritz Ollendorff, Nicola Zaccaria, Gabriella Carturan & Mario Carlin

Philharmonia Orchestra and Chorus, Alceo Galliera

This 1957 Walter Legge production was made on the back of Callas’s success in another of Rossini’s comic operas, Il turco in Italia: it was a triumph for the diva in Rome in 1950 and she recorded it with equal success for EMI at La Scala four years later.

Oddly, as Tony Locantro’s notes recount, Callas had failed on stage with Rosina at La Scala in 1956 (largely because of a poor production); but Legge held to his guns, and the result – her first stereo recording, in the sympathetic space of Kingsway Hall – is now a classic of the gramophone: ‘She turns in a buoyant, joyful performance. Tito Gobbi’s Figaro and Luigi Alva’s Almaviva also came from the Scala production, and their experienced teamwork adds considerably to the whole achievement. Galliera’s idiomatic conducting gives the singers first-class support.’

“If a criticism is to be made of Callus's Rosina, it is lack of warmth. But there is much to admire, as there is in Alva's Count, Gobi's Barolo and Galleria's conducting.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2007 ****

Maria Callas

A film by Tony Palmer

A study by one of the leading lights of music documentary directorship, Tony Palmer, of one of the most vividly remembered and sadly missed characters of opera. Tony Palmer pulls no punches, but the respect which he holds for his subject underpins the tenacity of his enquiry. Callas had a relatively short career, lasting a mere 18 years at the top, belying the stature which she reached, and has held since her death 30 years ago. Palmer says of her: ‘We witness on stage a broken woman who sings nakedly from her heart, about herself and her life, who acts with such incredible power and unashamed truth that we stagger back before what we know, in our hearts, is all of her.‘ At last, this powerful eulogy is released on DVD
